Jewelry Fair 2010 – Beauty and the Beast – Part 1

Jewelry Fair 2010 - Beauty and the Beast BannerI bet, if you have been watching the fashion feeds, you know that the 2010 Jewelry Fair started Friday, October 8th, and is running until the 17th. This years theme is the classic fairy tale version of Beauty and the Beast. This is not the Disney version. Four sims of creative jewelry genious. A truly well organized event all round; I wanted to share my experience and favorite designs with you. The experience was so full it will take two articles to do so thoroughly. So let’s get started with some background on the event.

As with many of the events in SL this years Jewelry Fair is benefiting a good cause!  Again this year, Oxfam International was picked by the Jewelers of SL as the benefitting charity. Oxfam (www.oxfam.org) is a confederation of organizations working together with partners and allies around the world to bring about lasting change to help people in poverty improve their lives. Oxfam donates funds and assistance to many of the sort of programs and charities that we are seeing events for around SL, such as the earthquake victims of Haiti, the famine in West Africa, the drought victims of Chad, and the flood victims of Pakistan. Want to know what they do, but are sick of reading after looking at my blog post? Check out these videos all about their great work: http://www.oxfam.org/en/video.

Participating jewelers have a variety of ways that they are supporting the charity such as 100% of the proceeds from vendor entry fees, one-of-a-kind auctions (auction items can be bid on at the Beast’s Castle), paid sponsors, and events. Many jewelers are also putting up special vendors to share 50% of those proceeds. Attendees can also drop money directly into the wishing well to help fulfill the wishes of those that Oxfam aids. So now that you know the background, let’s get to oggling these awesome designs.

First up is Violator. This art disguised in the form of jewelry makes me feel ready to take on the world. For the pics from Violator, I just had to pull out the secret stash of latex I keep for just these sort of occasions. But when I tried on the latex, even though I got some cool shots, I realized that it was just too easy too trite to do the latex with these pieces. The pieces need the elegance of couture SL fashion to be able to see both the thorny tough side and the rose petal delicate side. So, I pulled out some old favorites from my wardrobe: Nicky Ree and Phoenix Rising. Nothing new but three looks I always feel good about how I look.

Next up is Violator‘s My Fetish in Platinum/Black, which I paired with Phoenix Risings’ Leo’s Pride, a full ball gown with luscious petal like fabric swirls in the skirt that mimic the delicate metal work of the collar and shoulder piece in Violator’s My Fetish piece. All pieces I am showing from Violator have gold and black options but my personal favorites are those with platinum, so that is what I am showing here.

I was also a huge fan of a piece I got as a blogger preview called Crystal line – Raindrop Pearl Accessory set(White). The offerings from Crystal line were really good but limited number. The creator clearly focused on the manageable and did those items well. The only real draw back for me was the inability to individually edit each part of the piece to fit my shape. I am not a fan of resize scripts and they limit functionality for avatars of different shapes and sizes. The necklace itself is gorgeous and well made.

So that is the first peak at the lovelies waiting for you. There are so manymore great pieces, I am doing a second blog on some of my other favorite finds at the fair; pieces from U&R Dog, àlaMood and +ROZOREGALIA. All these creators that time and time again impress me with their work in SL and at this year’s Jewelry Fair they do so yet again. So look for part 2 coming soon.

It is not just the designers at the invent that are amazing; it is the fair organizers as well. An impressive thing to note, based on my personal experience on the opening day and several subsequent days since, there seems to be little to no lag compared to most events of this nature. This can only be due to well thought out cleanly designed sims with four inspired sim designs make the shopping easier. A huge thank you to Delora Starbrook, the builder of these four sims, who really out did herself. You will want to check out the themes for these four impressive builds:

Jewelry Fair 2010 - Beauty and the Beast Sims

  • Beauty’s Castle: Organizers describe this as a majestic castle and grounds with formal, fancy and traditional jewelry.

  • People’s Village: Organizers describe this as charming, old-world Bavarian style shops around a town square featuring casual style jewelry.

    The People's Village

  • Beast’s Castle: Organizers describe this as a vast, dark castle and grounds with Gothic, occult and BDSM type jewelry. Think avant garde & chic, outrageous & potentially huete couture. The Gothic overtones to this jewelry make for high drama.

  • The Forest: Organizers describe this as a winding path through trees and foliage, with gypsy wagons, tinkers’ carts, cabins and straw huts featuring fantasy, ethereal and eclectic style jewelry. Think Gypsy Fair meets traveling circus. The only thing missing are those huge carts that they use to move all their possessions around. Fun, fresh and easy to navigate even if you have to make several trips you can quickly get back to where you left off.

About Ais

SL Fashionista cum wannabe blogger, born October 7, 2008. I answer to almost anything, but friends call me Ash. Please call me Ash, but I spell it Ais. Please come and enjoy my public airing of my crazy thoughts, styles, rants or raves on fashion, things and what not... And by public I don't mean my usual shout across a crowded gathering, "Hey, btw, those are great pants, shoes, bracelets, etc. Do you mind telling me where you got them?" or "Oh, you like my cleavage? It is Ayumi cleavage. The best thing since the real boob :D" What I mean is sharing my quirky, pixel-shy, latex loving, sense of style and my love of SL designers. To me SL Fashion is art, it is a passion, and it is something that brings me great joy to share and talk about.
