The 5th Annual Home & Garden Expo

HOME EXPO 2012 SIGN TEXTURE

HOME EXPO 2012

The 5th Annual Home & Garden Expo benefiting Relay For Life of Second Life, part of a fundraising campaign for the American Cancer Society, has less than 12 hours left. It close at tonight 10pm SLT, May 28th and covers 14 Sims with all kinds of amazing home and garden & breedables wonderfulness. That wonderfulness will include everything from prefabs and furniture to flowers and swimming pools not to mention living, breathing, breeding creatures from a mix of well-known and some not so well-known creators. There is actually a really impressive list of 1s and second level event sponsors this year, and I would strongly encourage you to make sure you visit before the opportunity is up. You can find a list those sponsors here: http://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com/expo-sponsors/.

One of this years biggest sponsors has become near and dear to my heart as it is one of my most recent SL addictions, one which I never thought I would succumb, Breedables! Yes, it is true, I am just starting to raise KittyCatS. Breedables. You have probably noticed several of my cats in recent pictures and those sprinkled through this article, and they aren’t the only breedables there this year. There is so much to see I will barely even be able to touch on any of this, but here goes. So don’t waste time reading all the details of the article. Glance over the pictures and then run for the Expo before it is too late. Check out the official website, http://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com, for all the details of maps and TP points.

All the Exhibitors is selling two original exclusive-to-the-Home-Expo items, the sales of which are earmarked for Relay For Life.  These items are new to the grid, making their first appearance in the SL market at the Expo.  The price of these items are set by the designers and every penny will go to RFL.  After the Expo ends, creators are free to continue selling the items in their main stores, if they so choose. Some of the creators are also participating in the event Hunt. The items will be hidden around the 13 sims at each participating exhibitors display. This is NOT a free hunt – Hunters pay a fee for each hidden object that is donated to RFL.  For more info, those interested in hunting can visit the Expo Hunt  info page. There is also the RAFFLE FOR RELAY! you can still get in on. Lots of awesome prizes, including some valued at more than 10k each!  Daily & Grand Finale Drawings. No need to be present to win Expo Fair Entertainment (19,97,23).

Happy Valentine’s Day

Mixing Old & New

SL for me has had two primary concentrations for me lately, Back to Black and Sorting Inventory. In the process of doing both, I was able to put together a comfortable Valentine’s day look.

Hugs & Kisses

The skin is a new one from Illusory and is only available from February 8 –  March 7 at the Collaborate themed shopping venue. It is truly lovely. Clean, fresh, and innocently seductive. It is a perfect match for the new Elikatira hair, Abbey. This hair, inspired by one of my favorite broadcasts on Masterpiece Theatre called Downton Abbey, is one I started drooling over as soon as Elika posted a picture of it on Flickr. She has since updated her blog to let all those, like me, who bought it as soon as it released to let us know that a HUD is now available for color changing the ribbon (use the redelivery system in the store to get the latest version which includes the HUD.).

Sweats, Socks, & Shoes

The socks and shoes are both staples of my inventory and I have had them for what seems like forever, although Maitreya didn’t release the socks nearly as far back as I got my Pornstar Hi-tops. They are both so comfortable and casual and go well with so many things. Here I actually doubled up on a copy of the socks to give the tiered look and the color and pattern change options on the shoes allowed me to mix and match for a combination that matched the other items in my outfit.

The sweats are from IREN and they are one of the five colors of sweats being offered from IREN at the Back to Black event. The creator has made a few different options to be able to provide some variety to your shape. Hopefully you can find one that closely fits your own body type. The texturing and accessories are excellent and a fine example of the sort of exciting items that are available at Back to Black. My next post will show a few more items from the event to look forward.

So to all my friends and family out there, Happy Valentine’s Day.

Back to Black

Yesterday marked the launch of BACK TO BLACK, a shopping event in SL that also seeks to raise awareness about mental illnesses. Organized and hosted by CHIC Management (http://www.chic-management.com/?page_id=1236), the event runs through 4PM February 29th, 2012. Designers were given themes of HOPE in this event and asked to create between 1 and 3 items which embraced the theme of their group. The themes are Comfort, Courage, Determination, Endurance, Family, Fighter, Friendship, Heart, Home, Hope, Life, Serenity, Spirit, Strength, and Survival. They invite you to check out the event (found here http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/CHIC/68/123/26) and hopefully become more aware while you are at it.

Over the next several articles, I plan to feature items from the event and share information about Mental Health Disorders and resources where you can find more information about some of the disorders and seeking out help, either for yourself, or someone you care about. And did you know, according to BringShange2Mind.org, “1 in 6 adults suffers from a mental illness” (http://bringchange2mind.org/).

B2B Outfit 1B2B Outfit 1

There are many different types of mental illness. The term itself is as broad as terms like Cancer and has many different interpretations and discussions related to those definitions and correct treatment. By no means will this event completely educate those attending with everything they need to know about mental illness or issues related to mental health in general, but it is a starting point, an opening for discussions and further personal exploration.

“One of the best ways you can help someone with mental illness is by understanding what it is — and what it isn’t. After all, myths about mental illnesses contribute to stigma, which in turn prevents those who are living with one from seeking help.

The fact is, a mental illness is a disorder of the brain — your body’s most important organ — and 1 in 6 adults lives with a brain-related illness including depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD and schizophrenia.

Like most diseases of the body, mental illness has many causes — from genetics to other biological, environmental and social/cultural factors. And just as with most diseases, mental illnesses are no one’s fault. The unusual behaviors associated with some illnesses are symptoms of the disease — not the cause.

But most importantly, mental illnesses are treatable through medication and psychosocial therapies — allowing those who suffer from them the opportunity to lead full and productive lives.”

FACT vs. FICTION

FICTION: People living with a mental illness are often violent.

FACT: Actually, the vast majority of people living with mental health conditions are no more violent than anyone else. People with mental illness are much more likely to be the victims of crime.

FICTION: Mental illness is a sign of weakness.

FACT: A mental illness is not caused by personal weakness — nor can it be cured by positive thinking or willpower — proper treatment is needed.

FICTION: Only military personnel who have been in combat can suffer from PTSD.

FACT: While PTSD is prevalent in men and women who have seen combat, experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event can trigger PTSD, including violent personal assaults such as rape or robbery, natural or human-caused disasters, or accidents.

FICTION: People with a mental illness will never get better.

FACT: For some people, a mental illness may be a lifelong condition, like diabetes. But as with diabetes, proper treatment enables many people with a mental illness to lead fulfilling and productive lives.

FICTION: Children don’t suffer from mental illness.

FACT: Millions of children are affected by depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses. As a matter of fact, 1 in 10 children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness. Getting treatment is essential.

FICTION: “Mental illness can’t affect me!”

FACT: Mental illness can affect anyone. While some illnesses have a genetic risk, mental illness can affect people of all ages, races and income levels, whether or not there is a family history.

What can you do to bring change to mind and help yourself or others with mental illness? (The following information comes from http://bringchange2mind.org/pages/get-involved/.)

Donate

Large, or small, every donation counts! Bring Change 2 Mind and other charities like it strive to remove stigma from mental illness & change lives. And even though this event is not actually a charity event (All proceeds go to the designers to do with it as they choose), that doesn’t mean you can’t give through organizations in the RL. There are lots of locations so I have elected to leave out recommendations and let you seek out the location you would like to donate.

What else can you do to help?

Choose your words wisely: Learn about the impact your words can have on those with mental illnesses

Words are very powerful.

  • When we say someone is “crazy” or “that’s totally mental” we’re perpetuating stereotypes.
  • Eliminate the phrase “suffers from mental illness”. Instead, choose, “lives with mental illness” or “is affected by mental illness”.
  • When we say a person is “schizophrenic,” we make their mental illness fully define their complete identity. Instead, be clear that this is a disease that individuals manage and live with, e.g. “he is living with schizophrenia”.
  • There are many phrases and terms; “crazy,” “nuts”, “psycho”, “schiz” and “lunatic” that may seem insignificant, but really aren’t.

While there may be times when it is too challenging or simply not possible to politely correct someone else’s insensitive use of language, you can always watch your own.

Future articles will also include more information on mental illnesses.
